Studio Visit With Eddie Martinez
35m
The work of Brooklyn-based artist Eddie Martinez alternates between traditional and unconventional modes with a mix of painting and drawing, abstraction and representation. Imbued with a sense of personal iconography, his practice often combines signature figurative elements, such as bug-eyed humans and eclectic headgear, with gestural, abstract blocks of color. Energetic and raw, his paintings employ an aggressive use of color and texture with various combinations of oil, enamel, spray paint and collage elements on canvas. He also produces large and small-scale abstract sculpture, made mostly from found materials such as rubber hoses, Styrofoam, cardboard and metal scraps.
Delve into his creative process, studio practices and recent bodies of work through an Only-in-YPO virtual tour of Eddies studio and in-depth discussion with the artist. His somewhat arbitrary choice of material and subject seems to embody the ease and lightness of contemporary culture; however, his style draws from personal experience, popular culture and a deep understanding of historical art movements, including action painting, neo-expressionism and CoBrA. Eddie's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at museums and institutions including the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the Drawing Center, New York, and the Davis Museum, Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA.
