Culinary Expert Grace Young - The Toll Of The Pandemic And Anti-Asian Hate
59m
Grace Young (aka Stir Fry Guru) has been a James Beard Award Winning cookbook author, historian, and filmmaker. But last year she became something she hadn't expected to be: a Chinatown activist.
In her work, Grace has demystified wok cookery with wisdom and humor, bringing historical context to contemporary kitchens. But her recent work as a fierce advocate for saving Chinatowns, through films and social media campaigns, reveals a community whose soul awakens, while on the precipice of extinction. Join Clare Reichenbach (YPO Manhattan), CEO of the James Beard Foundation and Network Board Champion of the Fine Dining Network for an intimate discussion with esteemed authority Grace Young, as she guides us through the critical role that Chinatowns play in America's culinary heritage, the anti-asian hate that has arisen, what we stand to lose in the aftermath and the broader effects on our local communities due to the pandemic.
Grace is partnered with Welcome to Chinatown to raise funds for Chinatown restaurants so they could provide meals for the community's food-insecure. She founded Safe with Sound, a campaign which delivers personal alarms to senior citizens. When she saw how the local, state and federal governments weren't helping businesses, she partnered with the James Beard Foundation and created the Instagram hashtag #SaveChineseRestaurants, which has expanded to include all Asian American and Pacific Islander restaurants. The James Beard Foundation also launched Open for Good, a campaign to help independent restaurants survive.
