USING RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (REBT) and COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) IN REDUCING PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS IN PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
When something doesn’t go our way, we may react negatively on impulse. REBT/CBT empowers individuals to identify unhealthy thoughts and beliefs behind these negative emotional and behavioral reactions, which may be triggered by a variety of stressful situations.
Through CBT/REBT, an individual learns to become more emotionally aware and accepting, and to alter his/her thoughts into more rational and positive ones when facing a difficult situation. This leads to healthier emotional and behavioral reactions in the future that enhance a person’s wellbeing.
The presentation is designed to both illustrate and elaborate the theory and practice of CBT/REBT as it applies to the reduction of psychological distress in caregivers who are in challenging family environments.
This presentation will help you to:
- Understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
- Distinguish between thoughts and feelings
- Learn the main features of CBT/REBT practice
- Undertake a problem assessment
- Develop skills in eliciting and examining negative automatic thoughts and developing alternative responses to them
- Gain practice in using the ABCDE model of emotional disturbance and change
- Distinguish between irrational and rational beliefs
- Distinguish between healthy and unhealthy negative emotions
- Identify, challenge, and change irrational beliefs
