*During the call there is discussion on the topic of weed. Please see the below comment from our resource, Rachel Graham on the topic.
"I mentioned that, like alcohol, some people can use socially or in some cases medicinally. Weed itself is not a PHYSICALLY addictive drug, however, it is an emotionally addictive drug. This means your body does not develop a PHYSICAL dependency and you do not have severe withdrawal after ceasing use unlike alcohol, benzos, and opiates where physical dependency can arise. When I am referring to it as a gateway drug, I am referring to emotional dependency and continued use despite negative consequences. One reason for this is due to the fact that the brain does not recognize the difference between physical and emotional pain. People can develop an emotional dependency on a substance or process long after the physical pain has stopped. In cases with opiates, an emotionally healthy person is less likely to become dependent with short term use, however, for an emotionally unhealthy person with physical pain as well, addiction can happen easily to medicate both physical and emotional pain.
If you are using a substance or process to numb out, destress, have more confidence or relax/sleep, there is an emotional dependency to help regulate discomfort vs recognizing and/or dealing with the discomfort. My call to action is to encourage folks to get to the root of behaviors that may be causing them problems in one fashion or another."
