As uncertainty grows, less than 100 miles from mainland China, Taiwan is part of the military-first island chain stretching from Japan to the Philippines, constraining Chinese military activity and ambitions. Their advanced microchip production - at 90% global market share - is ground zero for one of the largest dependencies for the 21st-century economy, and the basis for the Taiwanese Silicon Shield. In addition, with a population of 23 million people, these elections have represented one of only a few pro-democracy wins in the region, despite Chinese meddling, including repeated violations of sovereign air and maritime space. This meddling has helped China wage informational and political warfare against Taiwan; under the Peoples Liberation Army Doctrine of Unrestricted Warfare; which as one of the authors of the 1999 book announcing the doctrine commented to the effect that the first rule of unrestricted warfare is that there are no rules, with nothing forbidden.
